The lesser-known parts of Appleby
See how many you know already

Appleby has a massive campus. With such a large space, it is difficult to become acquainted with all of it, even for people who have been here many years. So whether you are looking for a secret hangout location for your friend group or are just exploring around, here's some lesser-known spaces on the Appleby campus.
- Chapel basement: Did you know the chapel has a basement? Probably. But did you know what exactly is in there? Probably not! Once you go down the stairs on the left (looking into the chapel from the main doors), there is a lounge with a piano, and a few storage areas for the choir. Go deeper and there is more storage, for Appleby Camps stuff. Not exactly the best hangout location.
- Dining hall basement: Did you know the dining hall has a basement? There's stairs right next to the entrance to the dining hall, below which are the dance studio and media labs (JGHB classrooms), as well as a prayer room. Go down the hall with the media labs and you enter the Sodexo staff areas, which lead nowhere. At the end is the staircase connecting to the far end exit of the dining hall (facing Walker House).
- Basement of admissions office: Did you know the admissions office has a basement? … okay, this is getting old. Students can't get down there, but Mr. Armstrong assures me that it exists
- Design lab balcony: The design lab has a door that exists onto the roof of the Barr Commons. This is not very practical - who wants to be on that depressing rooftop? It's also not safe, which is why the door is usually locked. Ask Mr. Bright if you are curious.
- Historical Room in Powell's basement: Go into the normal Powell's House entrance. To the right of the wooden doors to Willis Hall, there is a hallway. Go down to the end, and on the right side is a showcase of a historical boarding house room.
- The Pause: Between the Old Gym and the washrooms next to the Dining Hall is the Pause, which is Appleby's new wellbeing space. Surprisingly a lot of people still don't know this place exists or have never been there - check it out!
- RMRR and balcony: Like the design lab, the Raymond Massey Reading Room has a balcony. This has a railing, making it slightly more safe than the design lab balcony, and is an excellent place to test cool things like parachutes and paper airplanes.
- Stairwells, stairwells everywhere: And lastly, there's so many stairwells around this campus that it's hard to list them all. Here's the ones I feel are the least known though:
- NAC west side - next to Mr. Cambre's office is a stairwell leading directly to the outside.
- Social science office - opposite the social science office in the G-wing hallway is another stairwell leading to the outside. There is another stairwell a little further on leading to the outside and the dance studios also. (These might be the most useless stairwells at Appleby.)
